THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
Why not take the opportunity to go on a boat trip along the River Sarthe! You can even enjoy a meal on board. You can also organise your own river trip since there is a boat and canoe-hire facility in the town. Sablé is the main base for river tourism in the Sarthe region. The town also has a horse-riding centre and a riding school. So you can also explore the landscape on horseback! At the Mosaic Garden in Asnière sur Vègre you can visit an unusual, organic vegetable and floral garden.
HISTORY
A stroll through the town provides an opportunity to view the towers and ramparts which date from mediaeval times as well as the recently restored town centre. The neo-gothic Notre-Dame church is also well worth a visit.
Culture
The aviation museum ("Musée A l'homme volant") is located in the oldest house in Sablé (16th century) and it traces the history of human flight. It's open throughout the year, but you should make sure that you book in advance. Finally, don't forget to visit the Nouvelle Maison du Sablé biscuit-making factory where you can find out about how this characteristic French biscuit is made and taste some real 'petits sablés'! Then take a look at the Sablésienne de Biscuiterie where biscuits have been traditionally made since 1962.
